Liisi Örd (b. 1984) has mostly worked with abstraction or landscapes – subjects that help distance herself from everyday and domestic issues. However, in the painting “Fragment in the Grocery Store”, the artist comes so close to reality that the local art audience quickly recognises the familiar product packaging depicted. Örd’s authorship is immediately revealed by her characteristic pastose (thick and textured) handling of colour.
In 2018, the Tartu Art House hosted a joint exhibition by two artists, Liisi Örd and Martin Urb, titled “Fragment 5.10”. It was an experimental project where the artists based their paintings on random moments and snapshots taken by various people around the world on the same day – 5 October. The artists described the project as follows: “The artist lets go of control, allowing the fragment of the moment to dictate the artwork. They relinquish their own eyes and identity, placing trust in the experiences of others. These unfamiliar fragments of perception are gathered together, which the artist then experiences anew and transforms into a work of art.”
