Navitrolla (b. 1970) is undoubtedly one of the most well-known contemporary Estonian artists. However, the art-going public should be cautious not to be misled by his characteristically naïve and light-hearted painting style. This is merely a façade – the blue skies, blooming nature and charming animal figures reflect our everyday lives back at us, sometimes directly, sometimes more subtly.
The painting “Greeting Macroplastic” is clearly a critique of our times and speaks in a direct visual language. The giant rubber duck symbolises modern consumer habits and the fondness for so-called "cute" objects – a fondness that, in reality, has a devastating impact on the natural environment. The once small and innocent rubber duck has become unnaturally large and floats in a setting where it clearly doesn’t belong. Where have all our childhood or our children's rubber ducks gone? In which sea do they drift today?
