Rauno Thomas Moss (b. 1977) is an painter, graphic designer, semiotician, and lecturer at the Pallas University of Applied Sciences in Tartu. He studied at Tartu Art School and the University of Tartu, specialising in painting, semiotics, and cultural studies.
In recent years, Moss has focused on abstract compositions. His inspiration stems from both the inner processes developed through years of teaching colour theory and from modernist movements such as Suprematism, Constructivism, the Bauhaus, and others.
Approaching his work through the lens of a semiotician, Moss explores the meanings of colours and shapes. The title of the present work, “New York I”, invites the viewer to interpret the piece as an abstract representation of New York – a metropolis known for its skyscrapers, grid-like structure, and cultural diversity. The painting evokes the city’s inherent contrasts: order and chaos, structure and unpredictability.
